The Communication Group aims to support children with Downs Syndrome and their families. Parents, grandparents, carers, friends and their children meet weekly at Scartho Children Centre, in the grounds of Fairfield Primary School, Mendip Avenue, on Wednseday afternoons between 12:30pm and 2:30pm during school term time.
It is a place:
Our aim is to develop the skills our children will need to become fully integrated members of society.
We would like to develop the group further extending current activities, which are based on an understanding of the specific learning profile of children with Downs Syndrome, to ease the children’s transition into school. By focussing on signing, language development, reading, numeracy and social interaction, the children can learn effectively, going on to read, write and access the rest of the school curriculum. Accessing suitable training and current knowledge of the child's attainment would be an essential part of aiding their smooth transition into pre-school and full time mainstream settings.
The group is visited regularly by local NHS Speach and Language Therapists (SALT), and by the Physiotherapy department.
